No. 27. Kanheri Buddhist cave inscription. Prakrit.

The inscription is on the right hand side-wall outside the verandah of Cave No. 81 above a recess over a tank. This inscription is deeply cut on a honey-combed surface but the central portion of the inscription is peeled off. It measures 1.7 m x 50 cm. Letters 6 cm x 5 cm. Characters: Brаhmи 200 A.D. Language: Prakrit. Orthography: The letters are deeply cut and have a serif on the top of the letters. There is no distinction between the letters 'ra' and na', medial 'i' is written in ornamental style. Instead of 'ga' in the word 'Negama' the letter 'ka' has been used. (ShG)
