-Gift of a cave (lенa) on mount Tiraнhu (Triraщmi) to the community of monks (bhikhusagha) by the great queen (mahаdеvи) Gоtamи (Gautamи) Balasirи (Balaщrи), mother of rаjarаjan Gоtamиputa (Gautamиputra) Siri-Sаtakaнi, king (rаjan) of Asika (Рiшika ?), Asaka (Aщmaka ?), Muлaka (Mуlika ?), Suraтha (Surаштra), Kukura, Aparaмta (Aparаnta), Anupa (Anуpa), Vidabha (Vidarbha), Аkarаvati (Аkarаvantи), lord (pati) of the mountains Vijha (Vindhya), Achhavata (Рikшavat), Pаrivаta (Pаripаtra), Sahya, Kaнhagiri (Kрiшнagiri), Macha, Siriтana (Щrиstana ?), Malaya, Mahida (Mahеndra), Seтagiri (Щrештhagiri ?), Chakоra, who destroyed the Sakas (Щakas), Yavanas, and Palhavas, who rooted out the Khakharаta race, who restored the glory of the Sаtavаhana race. The cave was to be the special property of the school (nikаya) of the Bhadаvanиyas (Bhadrаyaниyas). For the embellishment of the cave, the queen's grandson, lord (иsara) of [Dakhiна]patha (Dakшiнаpatha) granted the village (gаma) of Pisаjipadaka (Piщаchиpadraka) on the south-west side of mount Tiraнhu (Triraщmi). L.1 Professor Bhандаrkar reads Puдumаyisa, and in other words assigns to the value of дha, e.g. in muдhaka, l. 2. The correctness of my reading is no longer doubtful; see Dr. Burgess Table, plate v.(ASWI);Buhler has: gimhаna; Sen. has Vаsiтhиputasa, savichhare, gimhанa. SI has savachare.
L.2 Buhler has Kukurаparaмta, Vijhachhavata; Kukura, i.e. Kukkura, is not Kiu-she-lo of Hiwen Thsang, as Professor Bhандаrkar supposes, as the latter regularly corresponds to Gujjara. The Trikандaщeшa gives Kukkura as a synonym for Daщаrha, a Yаdava tribe; Аkarаvati, - see Pandit Bhagwаnlаl in Ind. Ant., vol. viii, p. 260; for Viмjhachhavata, and is a correct translation of the Sanskrit Vindhyarkшavat i.e., Vindhya and Рikшavat - the latter is the Uxentos of the ancients, a part of the Vindhya range near the Narmadа. Parivаta may be read Parichаta, but I prefer the first as equivalent to Paripаtra, which I take to be the correct form for Pariyаtra, the north-western Vindhyas. Siriтana cannot stand for Щrиstana, but may be the equivalent of Щrиparvata.(ASWI) Sen. has Pаrichаta. Bu, Sen has Madara, Аkarаvati, Parivаta
L.3 Seтagiri cannot be Щreштagiri, but possibly Щvetagiri, a hill on the Coromandel coast (Mackenzie Coll., vol. i, p. 88)(ASWI); Sen. has savarаjaloka-maдala-, maдala, paтipuнa;
L.5 I take the compound dijаvara- to stand for dvijащ chаvarащ cha, while Professor Bhандаrkar makes it dvijavara-.(ASWI); SI read -kuтуba-
L. 6. Buhler has padhasasanиya-, Sen. has -patithаpana-, Khakharаtavasa- (SI, too), savamaмdalа, sakarasa;
L.7 Professor Bhандаrkar correctly emends this as ekakusalasa.(ASWI); Sen. read аgamаnaм, sapurisаna asayasa Sirиya, Buhler omits ekasуrasa.
L.8 I read chhanaghaнu- instead of chhaнayanu, the signs for gha and ya being very similar. The Sanskrit is kшaнaghanotsavasamаjakаrakasya kшaнeшu ghanаn utsavаn samаjaмщ cha kаrayatиti kшaнetyаdi tasya; I translate these words by aparimitam akшayam achintyam adbhutaм, and take them as adverbs modifying jita- in l. 9. They may also be taken with vichiнa-, which need not be altered as Professor Bhандаrkar proposes, it is the regular representative of vichиrнa, past part. pass. of vichar. Yuddhaм vichar simply means - to fight a battle- (Pet. Dict., s. v. char+vi). The passage seems to mean that Wind, Sun, Moon, and other celestial beings, assisted the king in a great battle.(ASWI); Buhler read: tulaparаkamasa, Nabhаga, Rakhasa;
L.9 I translate this by nagavaraskandhаt and take the ablative as ablativus comparationis, which occasionally appears in Sanskrit with the positive instead of the comparative. The phrase seems to mean - of him who, from his majestic greatness and fame, is loftier than the highest mountain; Balaщrи is the real name of the queen.(ASWI); Buhler read: naga-, mahаdeviya Gotamиya.
L.10 Kelаsapavata - is a pretty certain restoration, as the letter e, the top of lu, the greater part of sa and pa are visible. Mahidhika stands for S. Mahardhika, Pali Mahiddhika. I do not think it has the technical Buddhistic meaning here.(ASWI); Buhler has rаjarisivadhуsadam, Bhadаvaniyаnaм. Sen. not read [kelаsa]pa[vata], vimа[na] as vim . , Bhadаvanиyаnaм.
L.11 In line 11 chitanа stands, with the usual omission of the anusvаra, for chintana-, and apparently means - the taking care of - or - keeping in repair. The word used for it in the next inscription is paтisamtharaнa. Half the ta of нatа is visible and the reading certain. The donor is of course Puлumаyi. Before paтhisaro we may safely supply dakhiна. For the other lost letters, prolably four, I venture to suggest Puлumаyi, though with some doubt. I take pitupatiyo for pitрipatnyoх. The third letter of Pisаchipadraka is doubtful; if my reading is correct, the name corresponds to Piщаchиpadraka, the site of the she-goblin. I take savajаtabhoganiraтhi as a sentence by itself, and translate it by the Sanskrit sarvajаtabhoganirasanam. Strictly the equivalent of niraтhi would be nirastiх, which, however, is not found in the dictionaries.(ASWI); Buhler has paтhisaro, Pisаchipadakaм; Sen. read: chitaнаnimita, cha нat . . . . pathesaro, gаma, Pisаjipadakaм.
