Notes

L. 1. Fleet has Оm Svasti.
L. 2. Fleet has -dhо(dhau)ta-.
L. 3. Here, and in line 16 below, the jihvаmуlиya, instead of being clearly formed as in lines 3 and 14 of No. 40. Plate xxvi., is indicated, hardly perceptibly, by little more than a vertical division of the square top of the pa.(Fleet) The sign of upadhmаnиya, which is not clearly formed, is indicated by very faintly engraved stroke in the middle of the square top of the following letter pa. (AMS)
L. 5. (For s=samа-) the long medial a is here formed by a downward elongation of the right vertical of m. It is not half mark of punctuation as understood by Fleet (CII, iii, 198, l.5. Vide also ibid., 193, fn., 14) but full mark consisting of a couple of strokes.
L. 9. Fleet has Savit[р*]-.
L. 10. Fleet has svаmina [а*]tmиya-. Before | this word, yаmаtrо, there is a cross, to indicate that this is not the place to which it properly belongs. It is plain that the reading intended in lines 9 to 11 was Savitрisvаmina аtmиya-kanyа-pradаnеna yаmаtrоr=Aupamanyava-Vatsasagоtra-Nаgavatsasvаmi e.t.c. (Fleet) Before this word, above the line, we have a cross (kаkapada) which indicates that this is not its proper place. As suggested by Fleet (ibid., 198, fn. 1), the intended reading was as follows: Savitр-svаmina аtmиya-kanyа-pradаnеna prаmаtrоr-Aupamanya-Vatsasagоtra Nаgavatsasvаmi-Bandhuvatsasvаminо-. (AMS)
L.11. Before this trо, mi was engraved, and then cancelled; and ba seems to have been engraved and cancelled in the place where the trо stands. (Fleet)
L. 13. Over this visarga, there is a cross, to indicate that something has to be inserted here; viz. the passage commencing with asminn=еva grаmе, in lines 25 and 26 below; read upalabhy=aitayоr=аjга.(Fleet) (For =ёnumоditaх) There is a cross above visarga indicating that something, not engraved here, has to be inserted. According to Fleet, the passage commencing with asminn=еva grаmе in lines 25 and 26 below should be inserted here. (AMS)
L. 14. Read bhаgam=upanayantas. (Fleet)
L. 16. Read pravadanti, or pravadaмti. (Fleet)
L. 17. (For su) First si was engraved, and then u was added, without the i being sufficiently cancelled.(Fleet) Fleet has dattам; bhuvaм; gоptum. There is a svastika symbol after ptu which has escaped Fleet's notice.
L. 21 (For mоdati) Of the medial o, one part is attached on the top while the other is formed by the downward elongation of the right vertical of m. (AMS).
L. 24. Read mahим; the proper context is lanam=iti, in line 27.(Fleet, he has ёnupаla-) (AMS): Fleet reads nupаla- but the last letter of the line is clearly pа and there is no room for another letter. The remaining part of this passage, lanam=iti, is engraved in the beginning of line 27.
L. 26. (For vаpikа) Before this vа, there is a cross, to indicate that something has to be inserted here, or, more properly, before the щrи; viz. grаm-аrddhasy=аddhikа, from the end of the line.- The reading intended in these two lines was-Asminn=еva grаmе pуrvva-taтаkasya paryyanta-bhуmi-vapra-baddhа grаm-аrddhasy=аdhikа Щrиvаpikа panthаnaм yаvaj=jyештha iti kрtvа Nаgavatsasvаminе dattа. And this passage should properly have been inserted after anumоditaх, in line 13 (see page 198 above, note 3.); (For аdhikа) Over this dhi there is a cross, to indicate that something has to be inserted here; viz. the syllables kа dattа, which are placed between the lines, below minе.(Fleet) (For arddhasyаdhi-) There is a cross over dhi indicating that something has to be added here, viz. -kаdattа-, which has been engraved in the space intervening between lines 26 and 27.(AMS).
L. 27. This is the proper context of nupа, at the end of line 24. (Fleet) This is the remainder of -nupа- at the end of line 24. Cunningham proposed to read the symbol as 80. Fleet points out the possibility of the symbol being interpreted as 30, but rejects it in favour of 9. (AMS).
L. 28. Supply щаsanam (to utkиrннaм). (Fleet, he has Drонasiкghа(кghе)na)
(For seal) With the exception of the word prasanna at the beginning of the first line, the legend is almost entirely obliterated. But there are faint indications here and there, which, with the help of the legend on the seal of No. 40, page 193 above, and Plate xxvi., enable us to restore it as above. Metre, Щlоka (Anuштubh).(Fleet)
The lithograph in ASR, xvii, pl. xxvi, shows Щrиmahа-Sudеva-rаjasya, but it does not suit the metre. The legend, which, with the exception of the word Prasanna at the beginning of the first line, is entirely obliterated, has been restored by Fleet with the faint traces here and there and the legend on the seal of the Arang plates of Mahа-Jayarаja. See No. I: V above. (AMS).
L. a. AMS has Prasanna-hрdayasvayai-vikkram-.
L. b. The lithograph in the Archaeol. Surv. Ind. Vol. XVII. Plate xxvi shews щrи-Mahа-Sudеva. But this reading is not legible on the seal; and, as it does not suit the metre, it cannot have been so engraved.(Fleet)
