Notes.

L.1 For a discussion on the meaning of the expression Para-Nasaкgama see SN, Vishnukundins and their times, Ch. V, sect. iii (SN).
L.3 -pаrtthiv-оdit-оdit-аnvaya- : cf. mahaty=udit-оditе-Kаkusth-аnvayе in the Devagiri plates of the Kadamba Mрgещavarman (IA, VII, p. 35; text lines 6-7). In the Arthaщаstra a passage reads purоhitam-udit-оdita-kula-щиlam (p. 15) and a commentary thereon seems to explain udita etc. as 'one whose ancestors upto four generations (or seven generations) are pure by birth'. (See the Kauтilиya Arthaщаstra, K. P. Kangle Ed. pt. II. p, 19, n. 9). It is: interesting to note that from Indravarman I down to Mаdhavavarman II there had been only four generations of kings known in the Viшнukuндi family. Similarly upto Mрgещavarman there had been seven generations of rulers in the Kadamba dynasty. However Fleet rendered udit-оdita as 'risen higher and higher' (IA, VII, p. 36) and Hultzsch took it in the sense of 'ever rising' - (EI, XII, p. 136). -tilaka-samudbhуt-aikаdaщ-: read tilakasy=aikаdaщa or -аnvaya-samudbhуtasy=aikаdaщa, or -аnvaya-samu-dbhуta-tilakasy-aikаdaщa (SN).
L.4 snаna-puнy-оdaka-: evidently puнy-оdaka-snаna is intended. Cf. snаna-puнyоdakешu in the Mеgha., I, 1. -vaмщ-аtmaj-аlaкkаra-: read -dhyаta ubhaya-. Аtmaja may be superfluous (SN).
L.7 -puнy-аbhiphala-vрddhayе : read -puнya phal-аbhivрddhayе (SN).
L.8 Mандиrasagоtrаya : Hultzsch read Mандira-. -brahmамаy-а-: read brаhmaнаy=а- (SN).
L.10 Vacana-prешaнam may be equal to vacan=аnusрtaм prешaнam 'rendering service according to orders'. Cf. purva-maryаdayа sаdhu prешaнaм karttavyam in the Kanukallu plates of the Sаlaкkаyana Skandavarman (EI, XXXI, p. 9, text lines 13-14). However Hultzsch translated the passage in our record as 'perpetually perform every duty, (viz.) conveying messages (?) etc.' (EI. XII, p. 136) (SN).
L.10 For Fleet's remark on the formula аjга svayam=еva see EI, VII, p. 183, n. 11 (SN).
L.11 bubоdhayаmi: read bоdhayаmi (SN).
L.16 saptа(pta)-viмщatikaм: cf., vatsarе sapta-triмщatkе, above Tummalagudem plates, line 13. Hultzsch corrects Jyештha into Jyaiштha. But Jyештha also is grammatically correct. See Bhаnuji Dиkshita's Vyаkhyаsudha under Nаma. I, iv, verse 16 (SN). Tasminn=еva etc. is to be rendered probably as 'To you the order is that on the same (day) (or in the same village) the delivery of the charter (must be made to the donee)'. It seems that the office copy of the charter probably contained at the end the above instruction to the officer, in 'charge of drafting or issuing the copper plate charters, ordaining him that the record must be issued to the donee on the self same day without any delay or in the same gift village. The clerk who, as pointed out by Dr. Hultzsch, copied the office copy 'in a very careless manner', (EI, XII, p. 133), included unknowingly this sentence also. Hultzsch, however, read sambоdhanаt and treating it as a separate sentence, translated the passage tasminn=еva etc. as 'in the same (year) the delivery of the edict (to the donee took place). The above (was written) under the instruction (of the king).(EI,XII, p. 136). But the reading saмbоdhana tе is beyond doubt (SN).
