L.1 The medial sign in Viшнukoндi[и]nаm, though doubtful, looks more like и than i in the facsimiles (SN).
L.3 virahita-ripu-шaд-vargasya - cf. ari-шaд-varga-tyаgеen=еndriya-jayaм kurvиta (Artha p. 12). cf. also щatru-шaд-varga-nigraha-paraх an epithet of Mahеndravarman I, a contemporary of Mаdhavavarman IV. vи(vi)dhi[va*]d-upachita-trivarggasya - cf. Manu, VII, verses 26-27. Cf. also vidhivad= upachitаbhiх щaktibhiщ=Щakra-kalpaх in the Aihole praщasti (EI, VI, p. 6, verse 25) (SN).
L.4 Scholars are unanimous in taking this name as a variation of Vikramеndra (SN).
L.6 [ra*]нa- this letter is lost as the plate is broken away here (SN).
L.7 [ba*] - this letter is lost as the plate is broken away here (SN).
L.8 The ring above stra in -strи-, representing the medial sign, is not complete and its end is slightly turned inward, as in the case of щrм in line 1 above. R.S. Panchamukhi correctly read s=trиvara only (EI. XXIII, p. 91 and n. 6). Lakshman Rao also seems to read s=trиvara (IDL, XI, p. 59) (SN).
L.10 -щauriy-оdаryya- read щaury-audаrya. In this compound raya may mean 'force', 'velocity'. back

L.15 The portion starting from nayam -Auщanasam down to bhуri-bhух makes one complete stanza in the Anuшtubh metre. Yet, because the author intends to have a Virо-dhаbhаsa in the passage Vikramаd=аpta + + + bhаskaraх (see below), and because an instance where a part of a verse making a sentence with the succeeding prose passage is not known, a full-stop is introduced here afler bhаti. The passage nayam=Auщanasaм+++bhаti means having the political wisdom of Uщanas (i.e., Щukra, the Venus). the strength of Kещava (i.e., Budha, the Mercury; or Viшнu) (and) the lustre of Indu (i.e., the Moon) (this Mаdha-vavarman) shines (as) the very urubhаs (i.e., the Sun).' Cf. Budhaм Nаrаyaнaм vidyаt etc. in the Bоdhаyana-Gрhyasуtra, I, xvi, verse 43. Here evidently the author of the Polamuru plates, like Subandhu, famous for Щlешаlaкkаra wants to compare his hero with the planets. See Vаsava., P. 77 (SN).
L.16 The passage Vikramаd+++bhаskaraх contains Щleшаlaкkаra. For vi means sky or bird (i.e., Garuдa); krama=course, or uninterrupted progress; Vikrama=valour or Vikramеndravarman; bhуri-bhу=the moon (who has many births) or one having vast earth. The Vаsavadattа and Kаdambarи are noted for similar and more striking puns and consequent Virоdhаbhаsas. Therefore to dub the language of the Polamuru record as totally "bad" (SS, p. 131, n.) is to overlook the nuance and subtility of the language. The utterly defective passage in the record is in the imprecatory portion (SN).
L.20 Ta in -dakшiнata- is redundent. Sima is taken sometimes as a synonym of sиmа 'boundary'. back
